KNOXVILLE — Three University of Tennessee students have won national academic awards.

Paul Julian and Alex Perkins have received Morris Udall Scholarships and were two of 80 students nationwide named Udall Scholars.

Julian, a junior college scholars major from Murfreesboro, and Perkins, a junior biology major from Johnson City, received the awards because of their academic interests and involvement in the field of environmental policy.

Ashley Maynor, a senior college scholars major from Joelton, Tenn., has been awarded a Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies. It is one of 94 awards given nationally this year.

Maynor, a UT Whittle Scholar, is completing a seminar course in comparative literature under the mentorship of Dr. Karen Levy. After traveling to Poland this summer to work on a documentary film, she will begin a Ph.D. program in Comparative Literature at the University of Chicago this fall.

All three students are members of the UT Honors Program.

“Winning these awards shows that UT attracts excellent students who are very motivated,” Dr. Tom Broadhead, director of undergraduate academic advancement, said.

“These three scholars are committed to pursuing an education that goes beyond the classroom that integrates classroom and real life experience.

“It also tells us that UT has faculty and academic programs that promote this exceptional level of achievement,” he said.
