KNOXVILLE — Water, Science, and Policy in the 21st Century will be the topic of a symposium next week at the University of Tennessee.

The conference is set for Oct. 18-19 in the University Center Auditorium.

Monday’s activities will begin at 1 p.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday’s activities will take place from 8:15 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Speakers will offer their views on water policies at local, state, and federal levels, as well as scientific and industrial perspectives.

“One important attribute of the symposium is that its structure is designed to look at water from a global perspective down to a regional perspective,” said Dr. David Feldman, UT professor and head of the Department of Political Science.

“This will help people understand that global problems resonate in the southeastern United States. Some problems we are beginning to find here can also be found elsewhere in the world,” Feldman said.

Sponsors of the symposium are the Joint Institute for Energy and Environment (JIEE), Southeastern Water Resources Institute, and the Howard Baker Center for Public Policy.

“The Baker Center, JIEE and all others who are involved believe that there is a growing global problem with water,” Feldman said.

“In order to solve these problems, we have to draw upon many different disciplines. Natural sciences, engineering, and social sciences all have to work together,” he said.
