KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee today announced the appointment of Anthony Haynes to fill the post of director of state relations for the UT system.

Anthony Haynes

Haynes, a Gibson County, Tenn., native with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Tennessee at Martin, is executive director of the Tennessee Emergency Communications Board, also known as the state 911 board.

The appointment came following a recommendation by the search committee. Haynes will officially begin his duties April 1.

UT President John Petersen said, “This appointment ensures that the university can continue its dialog with state legislators as we all work together to strengthen the state’s commitment to higher education in Tennessee.”

In addition to working with state lawmakers during the legislative session, Haynes will get involved with local communities and build and maintain good relationships with state agencies throughout the year.

He will report to newly appointed vice president for public and governmental relations Hank Dye.

“We were pleased by the quality and depth of the pool of applicants for this important position for the university,” said Sylvia Davis, UT vice president for administration and finance and chair of the search committee. “We’re thrilled to have someone of Anthony’s experience and integrity joining our institution.”

Haynes was named UT-Martin’s Outstanding Young Alumnus in 1999.

He returned to Tennessee in 2002 to lead the state’s Emergency 911 system, after working more than 11 years in Washington, D.C. in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He also was a vice president of National Strategies, Inc., a public policy and business consulting firm.
