State Science Olympiad Held at UT

The University of Tennessee recently hosted the Tennessee Science Olympiad State Tournament.

David K. Smith, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, is tournament director.

Twenty-four teams of students from across the state participated in the tournament, which was held April 2. The events included science concepts and knowledge, science processes and thinking skills, and science application and technology.

In Division B (middle schools), the Bearden Middle School team (Knoxville) took first place. Coached was Bob Fabian.

White Station Middle School (Memphis), coached by David LeMay, took second. Third was Friendship Christian School (Lebanon), coached by Jason Miller.

In Division C (high schools), first place went to Oak Ridge High School,coached by Dr. Nita Ganguly. Montgomery Bell Academy High School (Nashville), coached by Amy Seiters, placed second. Third was White Station High School (Memphis), coached by Dr. Paul Prather.

The top winners in each division will represent Tennessee in the National Science Olympiad
Tournament at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, May 20-21, 2005.

The Tennessee Science Olympiad State Tournament is sponsored by the UT College of Arts and Sciences Office of Academic Outreach, with support from the Division of Biology, the College of Engineering, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences, UT/ORNL Science Alliance, the Tennessee Academy of Sciences and Lockwood Greene Engineering.
