KNOXVILLE — Jonathan Utley, a retired University of Tennessee history professor, will discuss “Why Nations Go to War: Lessons From World War II” at a Pearl Harbor Day presentation on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. at the East Tennessee Historical Society, 601 South Gay St.

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is jointly sponsored by UT through its Center for the Study of War and Society and the East Tennessee Historical Society.

Utley, who taught at UT for 25 years, is the author of two books, “Going to War with Japan: 1937-1941″ and “An American Battleship at Peace and War: The USS Tennessee.” Since retiring in 1994, Utley has been researching a biography of Tennessee politician Cordell Hull, who served as secretary of state under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Pearl Harbor Day remembers the Dec. 7, 1941, attack by Japan on the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which prompted America’s entrance into World War II.
