KNOXVILLE — Dr. Robert A. Levy has been named vice president for academic affairs for the University of Tennessee system. Levy has served as interim vice president since the Board of Trustees appointed him in March of 2004.

“Bob has dedicated his life to higher education, both in the classroom and as an administrator,” said UT President John Petersen. “His unique knowledge of both aspects of the university makes him the ideal person to administer our academic efforts.”

Levy is responsible for academic decisions concerning UT’s campuses and institutes across the state. He helps to manage faculty policies, including appointments and tenure, and assists in the creation and approval of new academic programs and the evaluation of existing programs.

In addition, he serves as a liaison with external organizations such as the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, Tennessee Board of Regents and accrediting agencies.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to work closely with President Petersen and other members of his staff at this exciting time for the UT system,” said Levy. “I hope to be able to apply my knowledge of the system to help add value to each UT campus and institute, to every faculty member and to all of our students.”

As interim vice president Levy led the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools reaccreditation process. The nearly two-year evaluation reviewed all UT programs and policies and SACS members determined that UT had been highly successful in fulfilling the school’s educational objectives and mission. UT was fully reaccredited in December 2005.

Throughout his 30-year career at UT, Levy has dealt with such diverse issues as performance funding, intellectual property, desegregation, international education, distance learning, and centers and chairs of excellence.

Levy holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in British literature and began his career teaching junior high school in Pennsylvania. He then taught English, creative writing and interdisciplinary humanities at Transylvania University in Kentucky before coming to UT.
