Robert J. Hinde and his fellow commissioners will establish and maintain the scientific “language” physical chemists use across continents and cultures to translate and understand their work regardless of location.
“It’s vital that scientists be able to communicate across different languages and cultures,” said Hinde, an associate professor of physical and computational chemistry. “I’m pleased to help play a part in that effort.”
Hinde joins the Commission on Physicochemical Symbols, Terminology and Units of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. He’ll be joined by other representatives from throughout Europe, as well as Australia and Korea.
“To be named to an IUPAC Commission is a wonderful international recognition, and we are proud that Professor Hinde has received this honor,” said Bruce Bursten, UT arts and sciences dean.
Along with setting standards and names, commissioners ensure that their standards are communicated to scientists, and that scientists adopt them.
Hinde’s appointment to the commission is for two years. For more on Hinde and his research, visit http://www.chem.utk.edu/hinde.html
