KNOXVILLE –- Students from the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy are offering voter registration during summer orientation and already have signed up about 50 new voters.

“Baker Scholars are participating in morning information fairs during this summer’s freshman orientation sessions, where they are providing voter registration forms and information about voting in Knox County,” said Brad Vaughan, a Baker Scholar who graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics. He will start law school at UT this fall.

The voter registration drive will continue throughout the summer.

“Voting for UT students is very easy — all students who live on campus are members of the same precinct and vote in the University Center on Election Day. Additionally, any student can vote early at the downtown courthouse, if that is more convenient,” Vaughan said.

“Any student who will turn 18 by Election Day is eligible to register for this fall’s election, but voter registration forms must be received by the Knox County Election Commission at least 30 days prior to Election Day in order to vote,” he said.

Early voting for the Aug. 3 primary begins July 14. Oct. 6 is the last day to register for the state and federal general election on Nov. 7.
