“This acquisition essentially extends the west side of the campus,” UT Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Denise Barlow said, “and gives us an opportunity to add office and warehouse space without having to build new facilities.”

UT paid $5.5 million for the 82,000-square-foot building and 11 acres of surrounding land.

The warehouse will be used for storage of residence hall equipment, storage for Network Services, and climate-controlled storage of infrequently circulated library books and journals.

Art department studios for faculty and students will also move to the warehouse.

The property provides approximately 400 parking spaces.

UT had budgeted over $3 million to tear down old construction and build a new warehouse on Middlebrook Pike. Barlow said purchasing the Metron Building will also save UT the cost of building new office space.

The warehouse facility will be occupied this month and the rest of the building will be occupied and functioning by early next year.
