UT Athletics Presents $1.375 Million Check to University for Academic Scholarships
KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee Athletics Department presented a check for $1.375 million to UT Chancellor Loren Crabtree at the home season opener football game against the University of California.
$1.375 Million Check for Academic Scholarships “A key goal of athletics is to be a good citizen — to the university, the city of Knoxville and the state of Tennessee,” said Mike Hamilton, men’s athletics director. “This is just one of the ways we can give back to the university and UT students.”
Every year, the athletic department provides funds to the university for academic scholarships that are awarded to non student-athletes. These funds for the fiscal year 2006 totaled $1.375 million, providing more than 2,400 students with the opportunity to further their education. The athletic department spent an additional $6.48 million for scholarships for 348 student-athletes in the 2005-2006 academic year.
Along with its contributions for scholarships, the athletic department also contributed to improving overall campus life in other ways including –
-$9.1 million for facilities, utilities’ costs and maintenance expenses;
-$760,000 in travel expenses and $75,000 in scholarships for the Pride of the Southland Marching Band;
-$1.125 million in annual debt service on a number of University parking garages; and
-Over $11.99 million dollars in athletic benefits for university employees and students through free or reduced rate tickets to sporting events, licensing revenue, player of the game scholarships and alumni association tickets.
