KNOXVILLE — Jess Baily and the staff at the State Department’s Washington Foreign Press Center help foreign correspondents and journalists cover the U.S by providing them access to authoritative sources and deepening their understanding of U.S. politics, society, business and culture.

Jess Baily Baily comes to the University of Tennessee Knoxville on March 20 to talk about the current challenges in U.S. public diplomacy from the perspective of a practitioner.

His lecture, “Real World Public Diplomacy: Connecting Across the Static,” will be held at 3 p.m. in the Shiloh Room of the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center. Free and open to the public, this event is sponsored by the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, the College of Communication and Information and the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy.

Baily has been director of the Foreign Press Center since August 2005. The center works with about 2,000 resident foreign correspondents and visiting journalists.

“We are very pleased to have Jess Baily come to our campus and present to our students a real-world perspective of American public diplomacy and how the media are involved in the process,” said Peter Gross, director of the School of Journalism and Electronic Media.

A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Baily joined the Foreign Service in 1985 and has served in press and cultural affairs positions in Bangladesh, Senegal, Thailand and Turkey. Prior to his current assignment, he was counselor for public affairs at the U.S. Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands.

A native of Cincinnati, Baily has a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a master’s degree in European history from Columbia University. He speaks French, Turkish and Thai.
