Parents: This Law is for You!
The Tennessee Parental Participation Act, signed into law by Gov. Phil Bredesen in June 2006, is intended to help state employees who want to become more involved in their child’s education by more fully observing and understanding the school, the faculty, the students, and the teaching activities.
Employees with children enrolled in school may take up to one day of leave per month for this purpose, with the approval of the employee’s department or supervisor. The law does not, however, provide additional paid leave. Employees must either use annual leave or request leave without pay.
Supervisors may require employees to provide documentation from the school where the activity occurred. Employees who have questions should contact Human Resources at 974-5151.
