English Professor Co-authors Book on Suffrage Movement

Michael KeeneMichael Keene, Hodges Teaching Professor in the department of English, has recently co-authored the book "Alice Paul and the American Suffrage Campaign," which analyzes Paul’s controversial rhetorical strategies.

Keene and Katherine H. Adams, William and Audrey Hutchinson Distinguished Professor in the department of English at Loyola University, New Orleans, detail the dramatic techniques Paul used to gain publicity for the suffrage movement. Paul organized a picket of the White House in 1917 and was later arrested. While in prison, Paul went on a hunger strike and was force fed with tubes.

"Alice Paul and the American Suffrage Campaign" is published by the University of Illinois Press.
