KNOXVILLE –- Noted scholar Richard Carwardine, an expert on politics, religion and Abraham Lincoln, will speak at the University of Tennessee on March 25 and 26.

Richard CarwardineCarwardine, the Rhodes Professor of American history at Oxford University and one of the world’s most distinguished scholars of the Jacksonian and Civil War eras, will lecture on “Abraham Lincoln, God and the American Civil War” at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, in the University Center Auditorium.

Carwardine’s second lecture,”‘Fighting Parsons’ and ‘Millennial Harmony’: Religious Warfare and National Integration in Pre-Civil War America,” will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, in the University Center Hermitage Room.

Both events are free and open to the public.

His visit is sponsored by the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, the Center for Jacksonian America and the Humanities Initiative of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Receptions with light refreshments will follow both talks. Carwardine’s books will be available for purchase and signing.

Carwardine’s book “Lincoln: A Life of Purpose and Power” won the prestigious Lincoln Prize and was announced by the White House to be at the top of President Bush’s summer reading list for 2006.

Carwardine focuses on Lincoln’s influence on society and the Civil War. He said Lincoln’s greatest achievement was to understand the way ordinary people think and reach them with uncommon assurance.

Carwardine has written extensively on the historical intersection of religion and politics in American life. His “Evangelicals and Politics in Antebellum America” is considered a classic in its field.

He is now working on a book on religion from the Revolution to the Civil War and its impact on the United States.
