Author, Activist John Prendergast Speaks at UT March 25
KNOXVILLE — Human rights activist John Prendergast, who is involved in an initiative to end genocide particularly in Sudan and northern Uganda, will speak at UT on March 25.
Prendergast’s program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the University Center auditorium. The event, sponsored by the Issues Committee, is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the event.
Prendergast co-wrote the 2007 best-selling book “Not on Our Watch” with Don Cheadle, who starred in the movie “Hotel Rwanda.”
He is co-chair of ENOUGH, a project to end genocide and crimes against humanity. To dispel the widespread belief that nothing can stop the atrocities, the program highlights policies that have been used and been successful.
Prendergast was director of African Affairs at the National Security Council and special adviser at the Department of State during the Clinton administration. He has written eight books on Africa and worked on several documentaries.
Currently, Prendergast is working on a campaign with the NBA and Participant Productions to increase awareness on Darfur and a campaign to end the violence against women and girls in the Congo.
The Issues Committee is a component of the Central Program Council, which represents seven committees under the Office of Student Activities. The goal of this student-driven organization is to bring interesting and informative issues to the university community.
