KNOXVILLE — Lindsay McClain, a native of Franklin, Tenn., will be honored for her volunteer spirit during the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s annual Chancellor’s Honors Banquet, to be held Wednesday, April 9, at the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center.

McClain, a junior College Scholars student, will be honored with the Volunteer of the Year award, given to a rising senior who shows outstanding strength of character and service to the University of Tennessee.

McClain’s volunteer work has taken her across the globe. She was critical in the development of two fundraisers through Knoxville Jazz for Justice, which raised more than $11,000 for girls’ education in Northern Uganda. She then traveled to Uganda in the summer of 2007 to use a portion of the funds to implement a music, dance and drama program at Gulu High School in Northern Uganda. McClain is now back in Uganda through May, where she is serving as an intern for the Uganda Parliament, specifically with the Committee on Defense and Internal Affairs and the Committee on Presidential Affairs.

McClain also volunteers her time and talents at home. This fall she volunteered once a week with inner-city children at Sam E. Hill Preschool. In addition to serving as a special education classroom assistant, she used her time to research the American school system and produce an essay comparing it with schools in Northern Uganda.

McClain is also a member of Amnesty International, Roteract Club, UT Solidarity Movement and the Uganda Conflict Action Network, and she serves as the Tennessee chairperson and vice-president for the Volunteers for Ethiopian Orphans group.

The full list of all faculty, staff and student awards will be available online Thursday, April 10 at http://chancellor.utk.edu/honorsbanquet/. Archived video of the event also will be available at this site.
