KNOXVILLE — Mike Shiley, a freelance journalist and filmmaker, will show his documentary “Inside Iraq: The Untold Stories” at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, on April 17.

Shiley’s 90-minute film will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the University Center auditorium. The event, sponsored by the Issues Committee, is free and open to the public. A question-and-answer session with Shiley will follow the movie.

The film reveals the daily challenges endured by Iraqi people and U.S. soldiers in Iraq. Armed with one camera and a homemade press badge, Shiley traveled throughout Iraq from the Kurdish-controlled region in the north, to the infamous Sunni Triangle in central Iraq, to the sacred Shiite-controlled cities in the south. Shiley offers a nonpartisan presentation of Iraq and the U.S. military.

These stories have been aired on “ABC World News Tonight,” “Nightline” and “Good Morning America.”

Shiley’s award-winning freelance photography and journalism have covered a myriad of topics including Hurricane Katrina and immigration. He also has visited more than 36 countries, where he has trekked to the base camp of Mount Everest, guided more than 250 scuba dives in the Red Sea in Egypt and ridden his bicycle 3,000 miles from Canada to Mexico.

The Issues Committee is a component of the Central Program Council, which represents seven committees under the Office of Student Activities. The goal of this student-driven organization is to bring interesting and informative issues to the university community.
