Funding is still available for UT Knoxville faculty and graduate students who need to pay article-processing charges to publish in open access journals. A pilot program sponsored by the UT Knoxville Office of Research and the University Libraries has committed $20,000 to pay fees charged by open access publishers.

Open access publications are peer-reviewed like traditional publications.

Benefits of open access publishing include: 1) articles are freely available online to readers, increasing the potential for discovery and citation; 2) authors retain copyright; and 3) costs to publish open access journals are generally lower than traditional publishing.

The pilot program will be available through June 2009 or until the fund is exhausted. Any open access journal that makes issues freely available at the time of initial publication will be considered. The UT Knoxville Office of Research and UT Libraries will evaluate the program’s usefulness.
