KNOXVILLE — William Bradley O’Dell — a first-generation college student who is graduating in May — has been accepted into the prestigious NIH-Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program to work on his doctorate in biochemistry at Cambridge and conduct research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md.

Brad O’DellThe NIH-Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program allows students to enter a doctoral program at either Oxford or Cambridge, funding their tuition and providing a travel allowance, living stipend and health insurance for the duration of the program.

This year, the program received more than 200 applications and 52 students were invited to interview. O’Dell is one of 11 to be accepted.

O’Dell, of Newport, Tenn., is a member of the Chancellor’s Honors Program and a College Scholars major with a concentration in structural chemistry. Last year, he was one of three UT students awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Most recently, he was a finalist for the Gates-Cambridge Scholarship.
