KNOXVILLE – Two hundred sixty-nine students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, have received the study-abroad scholarships funded by a new international education fee collected from undergraduates. Another 10 students have received funding for study-abroad projects from the McClure endowment.

The students will use the fee-funded scholarships for mini-term, summer, fall and the 2009-2010 academic year.

Proposed by the Student Government Association and approved by the Board of Trustees in June 2008, the new $10-per-year fee started this past fall. Using that fee and existing funds, the Center for International Education awards approximately $300,000 in scholarships per year. The scholarships are based on a combination of financial need and academic merit.

Names of the 269 students who received the fee-funded scholarships can be found on the announcements section of the Programs Abroad Office Web page, http://www.utabroad.org.

Award amounts are $500 for mini-term, spring break and summer programs, and $1,000 for semester and academic year programs.

The W. K. McClure Scholarship Program offers UTK students financial awards of up to $5,000 to support study, research and creative projects abroad aimed at enhancing and promoting education for world responsibility. McClure Scholarships fund international research projects and cannot be used on pre-arranged study-abroad programs; rather, the money is used by students to create their own study-abroad experiences and projects. The majority of McClure recipients are graduate students who are going abroad to work on their theses, doctoral research, etc.

The McClure Scholarship recipients are: Gregory Curler of Durango, Iowa; Elizabeth Guyol-Meinrath of Kansas City, Mo.; Shuguang Ji, Blake Joyce, Brian Langford, Morgan Mander, Adrienne Roach and Shelly Yankovskyy, all of Knoxville; Pamela McLendon of Sevierville; and Katerina Spasovska of Skopje, Macedonia.

Additional information about the study-abroad scholarship program, along with eligibility requirements, application instructions and deadlines, also can be found on the Programs Abroad Office Web page listed above.
