A UT Knoxville staff member has been chosen to serve as a regional vice president of the world’s largest piano technician association.

Jim Coleman, a piano technician in the UT School of Music, was elected vice president during the recent Piano Technicians Guild Convention. Coleman will represent the interests of nearly 4,000 piano technicians around the world.

“It’s a great honor and a great responsibility,” Coleman said. “As piano technicians we have a responsibility to make pianos the best instruments they can be. As Vice President, I hope to provide opportunities to give my fellow technicians the tools they need to make that a reality.”

Coleman maintains more than 100 pianos for the School of Music. He’s currently rebuilding two nine-foot grand pianos that are scheduled to be completed in conjunction with the opening of the new School of Music building.

In addition to being elected to office, Coleman also participated in the Piano Technicians Guild Convention and Technical Institute. The event featured more than 75 classes covering everything from basic piano service to innovation, marketing techniques and relationship building in challenging times.
