The UT-Institute of Transportation Engineers Rural Teenage Driver Education Program was featured on WBIR-TV and WATE-TV. Led by doctoral students, the program seeks to teach rural teenagers to be proactive and conscientious drivers. Twenty-six percent of Tennesseans live in rural areas, yet 54 percent of the road fatalities in the state are in those areas. Using a driving simulator, the program focused on the engineering and behavioral factors associated with driving that typically are not taught in driver education programs. About eighty students from Cumberland County and Wartburg Central High Schools participated in the two day event.
