UT Knoxville assistant professor of Anthropology, Barbara Heath, has been taking students to Virginia every summer since 2007 to excavate two sites previously owned by Thomas Jefferson. Heath hopes to uncover what life was really like for the 18th century slaves of the Virginia Piedmont. Her research is especially unique because little documentation has been done from the perspective of the slaves. This video takes you to the excavation site.

UT researchers have found a way to make drug development faster, cheaper, and safer. The way involves making cells glow. Yes, glow. The researchers—Dan Close, Gary Sayler, Stacy Patterson, and Steven Ripp—use a series of genes to trigger the human or animal cells to continuously produce light—naturally. This is particularly important during drug trials. A healthy cell continues to glow, a dying cell flickers, and a dead cell is snuffed out. The researchers have a company called 490 Biotech and plans to bring their discovery to the marketplace.

Keep your eyes peeled and you might see a group of students from UT Knoxville’s College of Engineering cruising around campus in the electric car that they built, the Bug E Bev. The students were advised by UT Knoxville faculty members Paul Frymier, Chris Cherry, Robert Counce, David Irick, and Leon Tolbert.

While building the vehicle, the students studied the sustainability of electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and gasoline-fueled vehicles. They discovered that both electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are more economic than a Toyota Camry. Both alternative vehicles also have less environmental impact than the Camry.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5TKzFGGyog

The above video also is featured as an Editor’s Choice on the Planet Forward website.

The Bug E Bev runs on lithium ion batteries, and plugs into a standard electrical outlet to recharge. The vehicle can go up to forty-five miles an hour and can run thirty miles on one charge. It can recharge in six hours for about twenty-five cents.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, UT was able to fill not just one, but TWO trucks for tornado relief Tuesday. The UT football team semi-truck and another large box truck were loaded with cases of water, food, clothing, and household cleaning supplies, as well as many other needed items. The items were delivered to Salvation Army distribution centers in Bradley and Greene counties Wednesday. The donations will benefit ten East Tennessee counties named disaster areas after the late-April tornadoes and severe weather.

UT Athletics also donated $25,000 from the football orange and white spring game to the American Red Cross for Tennessee relief efforts.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHwZaDw213o

In addition to many individual donations, several corporations and organizations also stepped up to help. Each of the nine local Home Depot stores donated a truck full of cleaning and rebuilding supplies. Coca-Cola Refreshments donated seventy-nine cases of tea, vitaminwater®, and other beverages. Adidas and the UT Bookstore donated more than 2,500 UT football T-shirts, which were given to individuals who donated. The rest of the shirts were put on the truck for use in the affected areas. TeamVOLS, UT’s student service organization, began collecting items for relief immediately after the storms. The group donated two van-loads of items and provided many volunteers for the donation drive.

Special thanks to these organizations, to the many individuals who donated, to staff from UT Athletics and the campus for organizing the effort, and to the students and staff who worked all day receiving, sorting, and loading the trucks. This was truly a Volunteer effort.
