Smokey, the blue tick hound well known to Tennessee fans, will join his human co-authors, Tom Mattingly and Earl Hudson, to sign copies of their new book, Smokey: The True Stories Behind the University of Tennessee’s Beloved Mascot, on Friday, October 19, at 2:00 p.m. in the UT Bookstore located in the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center.

While Mattingly and Hudson will sign their names, Smokey’s assistants will distribute bookplate decals with his actual paw print.

The book, published by the UT Press, tells the stories of the nine hounds that have been the university’s mascot for more than half a century. Mattingly, longtime Tennessee athletics historian and author, has teamed up with Hudson, who owns Smokey, to share the history of Smokey from the very beginning, when Reverend Bill Brooks’ prize-winning dog, “Brooks’ Blue Smokey,” won the title of UT’s mascot in a student contest in 1953.

The book includes colorful anecdotes such as Smokey’s kidnapping in 1955 by mischievous Kentucky students, his confrontation with the Baylor bear at the 1957 Sugar Bowl, and the time he suffered heat exhaustion at the 1991 UCLA game and was listed on the Vols’ injury report.

Hudson and his family have cared for the Smokeys since 1994. Mattingly is the author of Tennessee Football: The Peyton Manning Years and other books, and writes about Vol history on his blog, The Vol Historian.

The book is available at Amazon.com.

Students petitioned for UT to provide Alta Gracia apparel earlier this year, and they are thrilled about the arrival.

“We are passionate about helping this product line succeed,” said Tommi Jamison, marketing manager of the bookstore. “We are working hard to get exposure for this product line, and we want students to know about it.”

The Alta Gracia merchandise includes four designs of men’s shirts and four designs of women’s shirts. The bookstore has free pamphlets on display about the products, and the bookstore staff is being trained about the company.

Alta Gracia pays its factory workers in the town of Villa Altagracia, Dominican Republic, a living wage, which is enough to feed, clothe, house, and educate their families, and is more than three times the standard apparel industry wage.

Alta Gracia is approved by the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC), an independent, non-profit labor rights organization known for its monitoring of labor practices in the apparel industry. Alta Gracia products carry a WRC tag confirming the products were sewn in a factory that supports workers’ rights.

Campus organizations currently involved with UT’s Alta Gracia Campaign are Amnesty International, the Progressive Student Alliance, Tyson House Student Ministries, the Food Policy Council, and Lambda Student Union.

Alta Gracia apparel is sold at more than 600 college campuses nationwide. The company provides workers with a living wage and way out of poverty. Visit altagraciaapparel.com for more information.

Visit the UT Bookstore or go to shop.utk.edu to purchase Alta Gracia products.

From: Sally J McMillan, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs
Subject: Reminder of Textbook Ordering Deadline for Spring 2013

This is a reminder of the October 1 deadline for ordering reading materials for your spring courses. In 2007 the Tennessee General Assembly passed a law designed to control textbook costs at Tennessee public colleges and universities. The deadlines of April 1 for fall semester, October 1 for spring semester, and February 15 for summer school need to be observed by all faculty members to meet legislative requirements.

The spirit behind the law is a good one: we all know that the cost of the materials we assign our students impacts their ability to succeed in college. This is why all of us already consider carefully the cost of books when crafting our required reading lists.

The UT Bookstore works hard to meet its obligation of being a full-service provider of course materials for our students. The bookstore is particularly important for scholarship students who often depend on it as the only place that can accept their financial aid in a timely fashion and get books to them before the start of classes. To speed the process, the bookstore added the Online Faculty Adoption feature on their website. Faculty and department coordinators can submit book requests electronically saving time and paper. The bookstore will continue to accept book requests via hand delivery, campus mail, and fax, but encourages faculty to use the online method.

Some students find lower prices online, in used bookstores, etc. Some faculty members encourage them to do so. If you will be encouraging your students NOT to buy from the bookstore, please note that on your book orders. The bookstore tries to stock the correct number of books, but it can lose money when the number of students purchasing at the bookstore is significantly lower than in past semesters. We need your help in accurately predicting orders and reducing waste costs so that we can keep costs to students as low as possible.

The legislation further states that textbooks, when the publisher provides them for free, are to be placed on library reserve or in a place of easy student access. I especially encourage you to donate these examination copies to the Office of Multicultural Student Life’s Book Loan Program. Doing so will help us fulfill the letter of the law, but far more importantly it will help us meet the needs of students who find the cost of textbook purchases prohibitive.

Please deliver the books directly to the Black Cultural Center, or contact Dametraus Jaggers, associate director of multicultural student life, at 865-974-6861 or djaggers@utk.edu for alternative arrangements.

For more information on the UT Bookstore’s Online Faculty Adoption program, contact Shirley Streeter at 974-1047 or sstreete@utk.edu.

Thank you in advance for placing your book orders before October 1 and for considering providing your examination copies to the Office of Multicultural Student Life.

Faculty and staff at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, have until Thursday, April 1, to order reading materials for their fall courses. To speed the process, the UT Bookstore has added a new feature on their Web site called Online Faculty Adoption. Faculty and department coordinators can submit book requests electronically, saving time and paper. The bookstore will continue to accept book requests via hand delivery, campus mail and fax, but encourages faculty to use the online method by visiting http://web.utk.edu/~bkstore/?p=adoption and following the instructions.

In 2007, the Tennessee General Assembly passed a law designed to control textbook costs at Tennessee public higher education institutions. The book order deadlines of April 1 for fall semester and October 31 for spring semester need to be observed by all faculty members to meet legislative requirements.

When publishers provide free examination copies of a textbook, state law says that one copy be placed on library reserve or in a place of easy student access. UT Knoxville faculty are encouraged to donate extra examination copies to the Black Cultural Center’s Book Loan Program, which helps meet the needs of students who struggle with the cost of textbook purchases.

For more information on donating books, contact Tanisha Jenkins, associate director of Minority Student Affairs, at 974-6861 or tjenki10@utk.edu to make alternative arrangements.

The bookstore will continue to accept book requests via hand delivery, campus mail and fax, but encourages faculty to use the online method by visiting http://web.utk.edu/~bkstore/?p=adoption and following the instructions.
