John Melvin Googin Jr. (1953) won the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Memorial Award in 1967. He was involved in the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and later was principal chemist and senior corporate fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He was Tennessee president of the American Civil Liberties Union, a fellow of the National Academy of Engineering, and held 20 patents. He died in 1994.
