Chao Yu Wu, of Vancouver, BC, died October 21, 2009. Chao Yu was born in Hefei, Anhui province, China and grew up during the turmoil of WWII. Gripped with patriotic fervor, he graduated from the Chinese Central Military Academy in 1943 and fought with bravery as part of the Chinese Expeditionary Force. Later, he became uneasy with the Chinese civil war, left the Army, and completed studies in civil engineering at the National Taiwan University in Taipei. He started his engineering career at the Taiwan Power Company and later completed graduate studies at the University of Tennessee, receiving his master’s degree from the College of Engineering. Chao Yu left the Taiwan Power Company and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1967 and continued his career with B.C. Hydro.  He devoted considerable efforts to supporting cooperation between Chinese and Canadian hydroelectric engineering organizations by facilitating engineering exchanges. He actively worked to open channels for dialog between China and Taiwan in efforts to encourage political re-conciliation. He chose to express his commitment to both his native and adopted countries by establishing numerous scholarships at universities.
