Golden Grads Gather
The class of 1958 joined the ranks of UT Golden Grads during the group’s annual gathering in Knoxville May 1–3. More than 80 alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago attended.
The group enjoyed a concert in the Alumni Memorial Building and toured the Institute of Agriculture, the College of Engineering, and Pratt Pavilion. They also lunched in the Neyland Stadium sky boxes and enjoyed a recognition dinner where they were honored for their dedication to UT.
Ralph Alexander of Knoxville, a 1938 graduate, was recognized as the most senior of the Golden Grads attending.
Pinkett Headlines Black Issues Event
Dr. Randal Pinkett, “Apprentice” TV show winner, entrepreneur, and author, headlined the third annual Black Issues Conference at UT.
Almost 370 people attended the event Feb. 9 at the University Center. The theme was Money, Power, and Respect: The Keys to Economic Empowerment.
In the Charlie Lemmons keynote address, Pinkett talked about success in business and charged the students attending to change prejudices. Alumni, community leaders, business owners, and students led workshops and discussion groups.
The conference was a highlight of Black History Month. Sponsors were the Office of Alumni Affairs, the Black Alumni Associates, UT’s NAACP chapter, the Office of Minority Student Affairs, the UT Alumni Association, and Scripps Networks.
Ronald Frieson, UT alumnus and retired president of BellSouth Georgia operations, was honored for his gift to the Black Cultural Center.
The 2009 conference is planned for Feb. 7.
