Josephine S. Roach, of Johnson City, TN, died June 4, 2009. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, receiving her bachelor’s degree from the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences.

John A. Roach, of Johnson City, TN, died February 6, 2001. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, receiving his bachelor’s degree from the College of Business Administration.

Carl Barton Huffaker (1938, 1939) was president of the International Organization for Biological Control and an influential professor of entomology at the University of California. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, president of the Entomological Society of America, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Murray Bowen (1934) was a pioneer in the field of family therapy. He was the first director of the Family Division at the National Institute of Mental Health. Clyde M. York (1935) was president of the Tennessee Farm Bureau and state commissioner of agriculture. The Clyde M. York Veterinary Teaching Hospital on the agricultural campus at Knoxville is named for him.

Ed Jones attended UT Junior College (now UT Martin) and graduated from UT in Knoxville in 1934. He was Tennessee commissioner of agriculture from 1949 to 1952 and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1969 to 1989.

Austin C. Shofner (1937) was a general in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was captured by the Japanese during World War II on the island of Corregidor but gained his freedom when he led a prison escape.

Kenneth Rush (1930) was U.S. ambassador to West Germany and France. He also served as deputy secretary of defense from 1972 to 1973 and deputy secretary of state from 1973 to 1974.

Philander Priestly Claxton Jr. (1934) held high positions in the U.S. State Department, from which he retired in 1975. He was president of the World Population Society from 1975 to 1985.

James Zwingle (1929, 1932) was president of Park College (Missouri) from 1947 to 1955. He later was a vice president at Cornell University and president of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges.
