He was founder and president of Howell Metal Company in New Market, Virginia and executive vice president of Commercial Metals Company International of Dallas, Texas.

Thelbert “T.J.” Hicks, of Maryville, died June 5, 2011. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture after 33 years of service. He was also a decorated U.S. Marine, serving during WWII.
